Nearly 125 children fell ill after taking their midday meal at a primary school in Ballia district’s Bahadurpur on Saturday. They were admitted to the district hospital even as angry parents held the teachers and some officials hostage briefly before releasing them. Four teachers, including the headmistress, have been suspended in connection with the incident.

K Balaji, district magistrate in charge said all the children were stated to be out of danger. A four-member team has been constituted to probe the matter.

Earlier, the children started vomiting on the way home soon after they had puri-sabzi on conclusion of their last examination in school. The cook also took ill. The parents reached the school and some of them held headmistress Pratima Upadhyaya and four teachers hostage. District coordinator (MDM) Ajit Pathak and the additional block resource coordinator (ABRC) Brij Kishore Pathak were reportedly beaten up when they tried to set the teachers free. The parents also surrounded basic shiksha adhikari Rakesh Singh, saying they would not let anyone go home till the children recovered and were discharged from hospital.
