13 injured in pharma chemical factory's explosion

Thirteen persons injured in a large scale explosion at 'Western Pharm' chemical factory in Kopargaon Sunday evening. The intensity of the explosion was so high that tremor was felt over the eight km area. The injured were admitted to Loni Rural hospital, sources informed PTI.

At Kopargaon Industrial Area, Santosh Abhale, the office Superintendent of Sanjeevani Co-Operative Sugar Factory, has his Sainath Chemicals Factory. He had hired it to Rajaram Shetty about 3 months ago. Pharmaceutical and export and import are the two projects in operation at Sainath chemicals.

Around 7.30 pm yesterday the chemical containing sodium exploded when 12-15 workers were working on the site. Fire followed the explosion which could be seen from a long distance.

Fire brigade pumps from Kopargaon municipality and the factory rushed to spot to extinguish fire.

The total loss to the properties couldn't be ascertained but it would be in lakhs of rupees, the sources said.
