At least 13 persons were killed, including two children and three women, when they were struck by lightning during pre-monsoon thundershowers in three districts of West Bengal on Monday night.
Five persons, including two women, were killed in Nadia district alone as smart showers accompanied by lightning lashed the district, official sources said.
While two women were killed at Chapra and Madanpur areas respectively after being struck by lightning in Nadia district, three others died at Chakdah and Hogolberia localities of the district, sources said.
Four deaths caused by lightning were reported from Burdwan district on the same day.
While three persons, including a 13-year old boy, died after being hit by thunderbolt in Memari number one block of Burdwan, another person died at Kalna in the district, the sources said.
In Birbhum district, neighbouring Burdwan, four persons, including a ten-year-old boy and a woman were killed and eight others injured in lightning at various places, police sources said.
While the child was killed at Murarai, the woman died at Muhammadbazar of Birbhum. Two others were killed at Rampurhat and Muhammadbazar areas of the district, sources said.
The thundershowers brought some respite from the simmering heat but caused hardships to commuters.
