With the Election Commission announcing the dates for assembly polls in Bihar, police on Monday cracked down on anti-socials and criminals in Purnia district, arrested 14 of them and sent them to jail as preventive measure.

They were arrested under the Bihar Crime Control Act, 1981, from various parts of the district under preventive measures being taken by the district administration for the conduct of free and fair poll, superintendent of police Nayyar Hasnain Khan said.

The police were carrying out a drive to identify other criminals and anti-social elements in the district and they too would be booked under relevant provisions of the law, he said.

The police had arrested 2,700 criminals in the past two months, including absconders and those not complying with warrants issued against them by the courts, Hasnain said.
