Priyanka Singh, the former beauty queen arrested on Monday for allegedly killing her parents, and her friend and co-accused Anju were sent to 14-day judicial custody on Tuesday.

Priyanka, crowned Miss Meerut in 2005, and Anju allegedly killed the former’s parents on November 10 in their Prem Prayag colony home here.

Piryanka told the police that strained relations with her parents, who never supported her aspirations and often ill-treated her, had driven her away from home and instilled in her a burning hatred for them.

Ironically, when a judge during the beauty pageant which she won, had asked her whom she would credit most if she was crowned, Priyanka’s answer was: “My mom.”

Psychologists maintained that Priyanka's extreme step was not due to a sudden fit of rage but the outcome of being subjected to prolonged harassment by her family members.

“Prolonged physical or mental torture can lead to aggression and anger among people, which after a period of time can erupt in this kind of violence,” Meerut-based psychologist Poonam Deodatt said.

Priyanka had also alleged that while she was staying with her friend Anju at Jayaprakash Nagar in Amroha district 50 km away, a cousin of Anju’s had raped her. “We have sent her complaint to the SP of that area for necessary action,” said Raghubir Lall, Meerut SSP.

Beena Bhokesh, SP Jayaprakash Nagar, however, said she had yet to receive the complaint. “If the incident occurred a year ago as press reports suggest, why did the girl not speak up earlier?” she wondered.
