14 named for hockey academy

THE SPORTS and Youth Welfare Department today announced the 14 names for the women?s hockey academy to begin at Gwalior from July 1.

THE SPORTS and Youth Welfare Department today announced the 14 names for the women’s hockey academy to begin at Gwalior from July 1.

Announcing the names in Gwalior, Director Sports Sanjay Chaudhary said that the academy would provide best of the training facilities to the selected players. “We are expecting the selection of at least six players in the national team”, said Chaudhary.  

The names were announced after seeing the players’ skills, physical fitness and stamina after three selection trials. In all, 38 players were selected by the department from across the country after organising selection trails at various places.

The selected players will be in the academy for next three years. The department will bear al expenses of the players during this time.

The 14 selected players include N Savrik (Manipur), P Sushila Devi (Manipur), Reena Devi (Manipur), Aruna Devi (Manipur), Pinki (Manipur), Savita (UP), Jameela Bano (UP), Shashikala (UP), Amrit Pal (Punjab), Paramjeet (Punjab), Niharika (Chhatarpur), Shikha (Chhatarpur), Reena Rathore (Chhatarpur), Bharti Verma (Bhopal). Nine players have been selected in the reserved category.

During the announcement of the team, former Olympian Jalaluddin, former international hockey player Avinash Siddhu, Jalaj Chaturvedi, Madhvi Sharma, Jameel Ahmed and others were present.
