Fourteen policemen escorting 51 prisoners from Gurgaon to Palwal on February 27 have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty.

Palwal district police chief Sanjay Kumar had ordered an inquiry into the circumstances that led to fleeing of 18 prisoners from police custody.

“I recommended suspension of all the 14 cops escorting 51 prisoners for dereliction of duty,” Hukum Singh, ASP, Palwal said.

Singh said even the court had granted permission for escorting seven hardcore prisoners with handcuffs, the police preferred not to handcuff them.

“Despite the fact that four policemen were injured in a scuffle with prisoners, their performance was not up to mark,” Singh said, adding that based on his inquiry report, the SP Palwal suspended all 14 cops.

On February 27, 18 out of 51 prisoners fled from police custody in Palwal when they were being taken to different courts from Bhodshi jail in Gurgaon.

Two were arrested immediately after their escape, whereas five more were caught from different parts of Rajasthan and Haryana in the last few days.
