The city police challaned 145 persons for drunk driving on Friday, while two offenders were arrested.

The arrested persons, identified as Pawan Kumar and Uday Singh, are residents of Delhi. They were released on bail, after being produced before a city court.

For the past few weeks, the traffic police have stepped up their campaign against drunk driving, especially during the night hours on the Gurgaon Expressway. The drive is also being carried out on the city’s busy roads that lead to or are close to pubs, restaurants and liquor vends.

“We have decided to focus on enforcing lane discipline, especially on heavy vehicles during the night to prevent accidents,” said Bharti Arora, DCP traffic Gurgaon.

On June 26, the traffic police issued a record 417 challans within six hours in Gurgaon for drunk driving. As many as 41 vehicles were impounded, as police teams carried out inspections in areas like MG Road, Golf Course Road and Gurgaon Expressway.

On June 9, three persons Sumeshpal, alias Bablu, Ravinder Singh and Munish Uniyal were found to have consumed more than 100 ml of alcohol. The three, who were caught entering Gurgaon Expressway from Delhi, were sent to two days’ police custody. Besides, they were fined Rs 2,000 each.
