THE JOINT Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to IITs was held in about 15 centers of the city on Sunday. Approximately. 15,000 candidates took the JEE. The number of candidates taking the JEE across the country was  around three lakh. The JEE question paper format was modified this year with more objective-type questions being asked. Most candidates were at ease with the new format.

However, what apparently bothered them more was the decision taken by Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh to introduce the Other Backward Caste (OBC) quota for admission to IITs and IIMs from 2007.

“This is a wrong move that will affect quality education. Our politicians should spare the IITs. If the Union minister goes ahead with his move, the credibility of IITs would certainly take a dip,” said Himanshu, a candidate who took JEE at KKV Girls College centre.

Other candidates like Swati, Tabassum and Reeta too were against the union government move. There is considerable resentment among the students against the move was apparent when several IIT aspirants said that merit would lose all meaning.

“No body is against the backward caste people. But, then has there ever been a case of talented students among the other backward castes not being admitted to IITs or IIMs because of their caste? This Mandalisation of IITs should be checked immediately. Otherwise, more and more students would opt for studies abroad,” said Raghav, at Mahanagar Boys Inter College centre.
