At least 15 people were killed and 35 injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train about 25 km north of Cairo, an Egyptian security official said.

The death toll was likely to rise as rescue operations continue on the accident site. The accident occurred late on Monday.

The cause of the mishap was not immediately known.
