A 15-year-old girl was brutally beaten to death by a mob after a panchayat gave its verdict against her for her alleged involvement in an illicit relationship. The panchayat had ordered that she be beaten with sticks at Mahadeva village, under Khadda police station in Kushinagar district on Thursday. The mob went a step further and killed her.

Following the incident, police rushed to the spot and took the body into custody when the villagers were trying to perform the girl’s last rites.

Sources said a dozen armed youths attacked Ramawati (name changed), daughter of Bihari Bind, after the panchayat verdict. The attackers paid no heed to her parents’ plea to spare her as she was innocent.

The girl succumbed to injuries later.

According to reports, the panchayat was called in the absence of the woman village head and the panchayat members delivered the verdict without giving the girls’ parents a fair hearing.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Khadda police station officer Atul Narayan Singh confirmed that the police had taken the body into custody. He added that it was being sent for a post-mortem examination.
