A 15-year-old girl committed suicide by consuming poison allegedly after she was raped by two neighbouring youths at her house in Kheri Mann Singh, a village about 20km from Karnal, late Sunday night. The victim's mother is also reported to have consumed some poisonous substance and is battling for life at a private hospital here.

It is learnt that the girl's parents were sleeping on the roof when they heard a noise from the verandah downstairs where she, a student of Class 11 at the village school, was sleeping. "As the parents ran down, they found Satbir and Dharambir who had allegedly raped the minor girl. After a fight, the two youths (said to be in their 20s) managed to run away. In the melee, the girl and her mother consumed the pesticide used for wheat stored at the house," said deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Baljinder Singh.

While the girl died at the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital, her mother is under treatment at Amrit Dhara, a private hospital, in Karnal.

The family refused to talk about the incident, but former village sarpanch Surat Singh, who was accompanying the family, said the girl and her mother "were unable to bear the grave crime". The accused as well as the victims belong to the same, dominant Jat community.

As of now, the DSP said, the two accused had been booked for rape and abetment of suicide, besides trespass and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.

The post-mortem report is awaited, on the basis of which further action would be taken. "Special police teams have been constituted to arrest the accused," said the DSP.
