Three bullies stabbed their 15-year-old classmate with broken glass piece outside their Thane school gate on Wednesday because he reportedly refused to give them money to buy alcohol.
While Nikhil Shinde, a class 10 student of New English School, is recuperating at Thane Civil Hospital, the police are looking for the three boys.
“Akshay Shibe, Sai Golamde and Omkar More used to often come to school drunk and beat up and threaten students. They would ask us for money to buy liquor. When I had refused to give them Rs 500, they threatened me with dire consequences,” said Nikhil from his hospital bed.
“Two months ago, they had come drunk for the school picnic. All this was brought to the notice of our teacher, but no action was taken,” he said.
“The three boys had summoned some 20-year-old men, who had come in a Qualis. Just as Nikhil stepped out of the school gate on Wednesday, they stabbed him in the stomach with a piece of broken glass,” said one of Nikhil’s friends who did not wish to be named.
Kopri resident Priya Shinde, 39, said she did not know that her son was being bullied. “There were a few schoolteachers at the hospital but they refused to do anything saying the incident took place outside the school premises,” said Priya.
School principal, Vaishali Chavan, said she wasn’t aware that the victim had complained about his classmates’ behaviour. “Teachers try to solve scuffles between students in the classrooms. Only if the situation went out of hand, were students brought to my office… We will take action against the three students," said Chavan.
“We got their names and addresses from the school and will soon nab them,” said deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Dattatray Mandlik.
Priya had retrieved the glass piece used to stab her son and handed it over to the police.
