Sixteen students were injured when a Tata Magic van they were on board was hit by a truck from the rear near Sahapur village on the national highway no-1 on Thursday morning.
The students of GMN Public School, who had sustained minor injuries, were taken to the Cantt civil hospital from where 15 of them were discharged after being administered first aid, but Amandeep of Badola village was admitted to the hospital after it was reported that he had sustained serious injuries.
Local residents said the students from Sahapur, Dukheri, Badola and Machonda villages were being ferried in a private vehicle when the accident took place at 7.45am.
They said the driver, who was allegedly talking on a mobile phone when the accident took place, fled the spot and villagers and police took the injured to the hospital.
Sahapur sarpanch Karnadeep Rana said they had complained to the school authorities in the past that against the capacity of 12 students, the van used to ferry 16, but their complaint fell on deaf ears.
