A 19-year-old boy was arrested on Saturday evening for stabbing to death a 26-year-old student.
The victim, Dhanraj Sakhre, was a third year engineering student of a Kharghar college and used to live at Tata Colony in Chembur.
The accused, Avinash Jadhav (19), is also a resident of the same colony.
Jadhav was arrested on late Saturday night and produced before a local metropolitan court on Sunday. The court has remanded him to police custody till August 13.
“We have booked Jadhav on charges of murder. He was also arrested last year in an assault case. But he was granted bail,” said police sub inspector Anand Pawar of RCF police station in Chembur.
The incident, according to the police, occurred around 8.30 pm on Saturday.
“Sakhre was taking a walk outside his house after having dinner. Suddenly, Jadhav appeared and allegedly stabbed him several times on his chest and stomach with a knife,” said the police.
Earlier on Saturday, the accused had a fight with Sakhre.
“Jadhav claimed that around 12 pm, Sakhre was found beating one of his friends. When Jadhav intervened, Sakhre assaulted and hit him,” Pawar said. This angered Jadhav.
“After this, Jadhav wanted to take revenge from Sakhre and was looking for an right opportunity,” Pawar added.
