The police have booked 197 offenders for traffic violations during the last week as part of traffic week. Anil Magotra, superintendent of police, Udhampur, said based on frequent complaints regarding fatal and non-fatal accidents claiming many innocent lives, jams on the national highway and traffic congestions in main markets of Udhampur town and all other major towns of the district, a traffic week was launched by the Udhampur police to check the menace of violation of traffic rules.
He added that apart from educating public regarding traffic rules for their safety, all territorial officers were directed to strictly deal with the violators under law, especially for overloading in the passenger vehicles and commuting from far-flung areas of Udhampur like Pancheri, Basantgarh and Latti, to avoid any loss of innocent lives due to accidents.
He said continuing this drive against traffic rule violators, 197 offenders were booked under the preventive sections of law for violating traffic rules during the week and 11 vehicles with deficient documents were impounded.
He added that territorial officers were also directed to recommend cancellation of the driving licences, route permits of the habitual offenders in this regard to send out a message to others.
Meanwhile, the Udhampur police seized 40 pouches of illicit liquor. According to reports, Udhampur SHO checked Ashok Kumar, son of Munshi Ram, a resident of Garhi, on suspicion and recovered 40 pouches of illicit liquor of J&K excise from his possession.
The police added that the accused was transporting these pouches in a polythene bag for illegal sale in his native village at Garhi. He was arrested on the spot.
A case has been registered and police investigation into the matter was on.
