Infighting in the Gujarat Congress and BJP over selection of candidates in the poll-bound state has triggered resignations of scores of local leaders and workers from their respective parties.
At several places, activists of both parties resorted to raucous protests against the candidates named in the first lists.
On Friday, more than 2,000 BJP workers led by local leaders Kanbha Gohil resigned to join the Congress in protest against the candidature of Kama Rathor, a sitting MLA who has been shifted from Viramgam to the newly created Sanand segment in Ahmedabad district.
Similarly, sitting BJP MLA Pragji Patel has faced protests from party workers in Viramgam. Aggrieved workers blamed revenue minister Anandiben Patel for retaining both sitting MLAs."The BJP has messed up the selection of candidates for Ahmedabad district. Two sitting MLAs, who face allegations of corruption, have been fielded again. A former minister who had lost in the 2007 polls has been re-nominated, denying an opportunity for new faces," a local BJP leader said.
Similarly, the ruling party faced protests in Magrol where the sitting MLA has been dropped. In Somnath, party workers protested against continuation of the sitting MLA. “Why has a non-performing MLA been retained?” a BJP leader from Junagadh asked.
Moreover, junior fisheries minister Purushottam Solanki is reluctant to contest against opposition leader Shaktisinh Gohil from Bhavnagar Rural constituency.
Solanki, a leader with a formidable base of the significant Koli community, is furious over selection of certain candidates from Bhavnagar district.
Meanwhile, due to infighting the Congress has directed candidates to file their nominations without declaring a list before the media. Party activists protested at many places regarding fielding of certain candidates.
