2,500 CPI workers arrested in Coimbatore

CPI and its trade union wing AITUC workers have been taken into custody while attempting to stage picketing against the inflation of essential commodities.

Some 2,500 CPI and its trade union wing AITUC workers were taken into custody while attempting to stage picketing against the price rise of essential commodities.

About 400 activists, including 70 women, were taken into custody when they were proceeding to stage picketing in the city in protest against the Centre for "failing to rein in prices."

About 2,100 workers were arrested for making similar attempts at various places in the district, including Tirupur, Pollachi, Udumalpet and Sulur, police said.
