Two constables were injured when they tried to stop a fight that broke out between four inebriated passengers and two autorickshaw drivers at Mankhurd on Monday.
Head constable Rajaram Pawar (46) sustained head injuries while constable Mohan Kamble (43) received injuries on his hands.
Both are attached to Shivaji Nagar police station.
The police managed to nab Mahesh Jadhav (26), a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena worker and Ramesh Rathod (29), a transporter.
“We have arrested Jadhav and Rathod on charges of assault and for disrupting a public servant from doing his duty. Their two other accomplices are still at large,” said DS Gite, senior inspetor of Deonar police station.
The police said that the incident occurred at around 4 am on Monday when Rathod and Jadhav, along with two other men, had hired two autorickshaws from Kurla station to Mangalmurti complex in Mankhurd.
However, after the four men alighted from the vehicles at Mankhurd, they had a quarrel with the autorickshaw drivers — Prashant Khopte (27) and Amol Bhoite (27) — over the payment of fare.
The men then allegedly manhandled the drivers.
“As the two autorickshaw drivers raised an alarm Pawar and Kamble who were in a mobile police van immediately rushed to the spot,” said said Gite. “When the two constables intervened, Rathod, in a bid to help his friends escape, caught hold of Kamble. Jadhav snatched the baton from Pawar and hit him on his head.”
Though injured, Kamble and Pawar managed to catch hold of Jadhav and Rathod, while their two friends fled.
