india Updated: Sep 03, 2009 19:20 IST

Two CPI(M) activists were shot dead by a gang of miscreants who raided Rajgarh village near Baruipur on Thursday, police said.

Police said the miscreants raided the houses of Abu Tayeb Mondal and Hashem Mondal in the village early on Thursday morning.

Abu Tayeb was shot dead while Hashem was dragged out of his house, beaten up and shot at, police said adding that Hashem died on way to hospital.

Minister of Sports Kanti Ganguly who visited the area along with ex-CPI(M) MP Sujan Chakrabarty, alleged that the attack had been preplanned by the Trinamul Congress.

In retaliation houses of 14 Trinamul Congress workers were burnt down by the CPI(M), police said.

They said five to six bombs were recovered from the spot.

Trinamul Congress' South 24-Parganas leader Gautam Das denied that his party had any links with the incident.

He said the two victims were anti-socials and had been done to death over a dispute in sharing of spoils.
