The charred bodies of two sisters belonging to the Dalit community were found under mysterious circumstances in their house in Moradabad district of western Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
The victims' mother, Rajo, alleged that her daughters, Gita (25) and Monu (22), were burnt alive by a mob protesting against the alleged involvement of her sons in two murders that took place here on December 9.
The mob gathered outside the Dalit family's house on Saturday morning and set it ablaze. Rajo managed to escape, but her daughters were trapped. "The neighbours tried to rescue them, but both were burnt alive. I have complained against 12 people who were part of the mob," Rajo said.
However, the police claim that the sisters committed suicide as their neighbours ridiculed them over the brothers' act.
"A preliminary probe indicates the sisters committed suicide," said Ashok Kumar, deputy inspector general of police, Moradabad.
The mother also alleged the police had not provided adequate security" to her family despite repeated pleas.
