2 dead in shootout at Rohtak hospital

Two people were killed in a hospital ward here when unidentified gunmen opened fire at them early on Thursday, police said.

Two persons, including a security guard and a brother of a patient, were shot dead by unidentified assailants late at night at Haryana's premier medical institution- Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS)- Rohtak on Wednesday. A patient’s attendant also sustained injuries in the shooting which occurred at around 11 pm in the emergency ward of the PGIMS in the presence of hospital staff, patients and their attendants. The deceased have been identified as Praveen (32), resident of Julana in Jind district, and Tejvir Singh (37), a security guard on duty in the emergency ward of the PGIMS and resident of Nooran Khera village in Sonepat district. The injured Sanjivan was undergoing treatment and his condition was stated to be stable. The assailants managed to escape after committing the crime. The police have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder and sent the bodies for post mortem. Four police personnel on duty at the PCR van deployed at the PGIMS have been suspended for dereliction of duty. The police suspect business rivalry behind the incident.According to information, Jai Bhagwan, engaged in liquor trade, was admitted to the PGIMS emergency ward after he was shot at by a group of assailants near his native village Shamlo Kalan in Jind district on Wednesday evening when he was returning home in a jeep. Sanjivan, accompanied the patient, Jai Bhagwan. After a couple of hours, a road accident victim, Sanjay, resident of Julana in Jind district, was also admitted to the emergency ward by his brother Praveen. Suddenly at around 11 pm, shooting incident occurred in the emergency ward where Sanjivan with three other persons was present. Praveen died on the spot while Sanjivan sustained bullet injuries. In the meantime, a security guard, Tejvir Singh, chased an assailant who was fleeing from the spot. The assailant then shot the security guard who died within a few minutes though the doctors tried to save his life.The three persons who were with Sanjivan boarded a car parked outside the emergency ward and sped away immediately after the shooting incident. Though a PCR van with four police personnel on duty was present outside the emergency ward, the assailants managed to escape. IGP V Kamaraja told the mediapersons on Thursday that two persons had been rounded up along with a car and were being questioned. Rohtak SSP B S Balan said that the murder seemed to be the outcome of a business rivalry between Jaibhagwan and Praveen. Though Sanjivan was injured in the incident, he was also being questioned as his three accompalices fled the spot after the incident.
