Two former ministers belonging to the DMK were arrested on Monday, one on charges of land grabbing and the other for being allegedly involved in illegal mining. Former agriculture minister Veerapandi Armugam, a close aide of DMK president M Karunanidhi, was arrested from his residence in Chennai and would be questioned on land grabbing, the police said.
The arrest is a follow-up on vigilance raids at 16 places belonging to the former minister and his relatives. The raids were in connection with an assets case.
The charge against I Periyasamy, former revenue minister, is that he illegally mined gravel along with another DMK functionary without the permission of the assistant director of mines, causing a revenue loss of Rs 30 lakh to the government. He is now in Tiruchirapalli jail.
The police said Periyasamy surrendered before the DSP. A magistrate court gave him 15 days’ judicial custody.
In January former minister MP Swaminathan was arrested on charges of land grabbing.
After the AIADMK government came to power last year, former ministers and leaders, besides MLAs, have faced action by the police or the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption either on land-grab charges or for disproportionate assets.
However, KPP Samy, a former minister, was nabbed in a murder case.
