Two months after a senior citizen and her daughter-in-law were brutally killed in their Malad flat, Crime Branch officials arrested two of the accused — in Bihar.
On May 28, Bhavna Sanghvi (54) and her mother-in-law Reva (79) were found murdered in their Kirti Kunj residence at Liberty Garden and jewellery worth Rs 1.2 lakh stolen.
Officials of the Crime Branch (Unit 11) arrested Omprakash Rajbath and Dilip Rajbath from Gopalgunj in Bihar and recovered bloodstained clothes from Omprakash’s house.
They are looking for the alleged key suspect, Niranjan Rajbath (33), also from Bihar.
Crime Branch officials said Bhavna’s husband Ramesh, who is physically challenged and works in an insurance company in Borivli, had bought an autorickshaw five years ago and hired Niranjan to drive it.
Niranjan, who used to drop Ramesh to his work place every day, had quit in April.
After the killing, the Malad police questioned at least 24 people, including the workers and owners of an imitation jewellery-making unit located next door, a plumber and the workers who had undertaken civil work at the Sanghvis, but got no leads.
The breakthrough took place after locals told Crime Branch officials that they had seen Niranjan in the area on the day of murder.
On May 23 afternoon, the trio allegedly sneaked into the house thinking that Reva would be alone.
“They smothered Reva to death with a pillow. When Bhavna came out of the bathroom, they hit her on the jaw with a grinding stone,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.
Dilip, who works as a driver for Krishna Tours & Travels at Dahisar, was earlier arrested for stealing Rs 12 lakh from a Juhu doctor’s residence.
Omprakash too is wanted for attempt to murder and assault cases in Bihar, Crime Branch officials said.
