Two members of the Hemant Pujari gang were arrested for making extortion calls to a well-known Thane-based builder.
The anti-extortion cell of the Thane police, who arrested the two, said that Ganpath Prajapati, 36, was arrested on October 11 and his associate, Janardan Pujari, 32, on October 17. “Pujari had been calling from an international number and demanding Rs 25 lakh from the builder for nearly a month. He also threatened that if he did not pay the amount, then he would be killed,” said additional commissioner of police (crime) Dhananjay Kamalakar.
A case was registered with the Thane Nagar police station and was later transferred to the anti-extortion cell.
“Pujari again called up the builder and asked him to get the money on October 11 near Thane railway station. The anti-extortion cell officials laid a trap and Prajapati, a resident of Dombivli, was arrested. We later arrested Janardan from Ulhasnagar, who is also involved. A pistol and two live rounds were found in his possession,” Kamalakar added.
The accused have been remanded in police custody until October 22. The police are interrogating them to get information about their past cases.
