In a joint operation, personnel from the Pune and Navi Mumbai Crime Branches shot dead two alleged criminals in Taloja on Wednesday evening.

The police said one of those dead Mobeen Ishaq Shaikh (35), had jumped parole while serving a life sentence. The details of the other have not yet been disclosed.

The encounter took place at 5 pm at a restaurant on the Panvel-Mumbra highway.

“The Pune crime branch had learnt that Shaikh would be at the restaurant. Inspector Ram Jadhav from Pune and our APIs Ghevare and Anil Patil laid a trap for him,” said DCP Pravin Pawar.

“Mobeen arrived in a tourist Indica and when asked to surrender, he and his accomplice fired at the police personnel. The police then fired back and in the shootout, Mobeen and his accomplice were injured.”

The police said the duo was rushed to a hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. “Mobeen, a resident of Ganesh Peth in Pune had 19 serious offences including four murders registered against him at Samarth police station. He had been released on parole while serving a life sentence, but he jumped it and was absconding," Pawar added.
