TWO TEENAGERS drowned in a pond near Ayodhya Nagar on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 12:45 pm, when four out of half a dozen boys, who had gone to play cricket, decided to go for a swim in the pond. Of the four boys, two were saved.

According to police, Rahul Shriwas, 16, son of Satish Shriwas, a resident of Prakash Nagar near the by-pass and Rajesh, 16, son of JP Gupta, a resident of Ayodhya Nagar, misjudged the depth of pond and got drowned.

The police sent the bodies for post-mortem and began investigations.

Two other boys, who had gone for the swim — Narendra and Anuj — were saved.

Other boys informed the Ayodhya Nagar police outpost about the incident. The divers fished out the bodies of two boys and the families of the deceased were informed.

There were similar incidents in the area in the past also. Sometime back, two teenagers had drowned in a water-filled ditch in the same area. Rajesh, 16, and Mohit, 17, both residents of Navjivan Colony, had gone for a swim nearly three months back.

Some quarries in the area are also filled with rainwater and boys go for a swim in the ditches.
An engineering college student, Pankaj, had drowned in a water tank here in May last year.
