Two top Maoist leaders were among five rebels arrested today in West Bengal's Purulia district, police said.

"Acting on a tip-off, the CRPF and its specialised Special Action Force (SAF) apprehended 'area commander' Ananda Kumar and 'zonal commander' Bhabataran Mahto and three others from the Ayodhya hills and handed them over to the police," Purulia SP Rajsekhar Yadav said.

A pistol, black flags, posters and Maoist literature were recovered from their possession, he said.

The five were produced in court and remanded to 10 days police custody, the SP said, adding that the five were wanted in several cases of murder, sedition and arson.
