india Updated: Oct 16, 2006 16:19 IST

Two undertrial prisoners, held under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), were shot dead allegedly by three unidentified persons near the sessions court in south Mumbai on Monday, police said.

Both were out on bail and the incident happened in the afternoon opposite Jehangir Art Gallery at Kala Ghoda circle, near city sessions court, where their case was scheduled for hearing at 3 pm, police said.

The two were rushed to GT hospital, where they were declared dead, police said.

Himanshu Chaudhury (25) and Amjad Hussain Khan (40) were brought dead with bullet injuries, Medical Superintendent of GT Hospital Dr HS Jadhav said.

Eyewitnesses are giving conflicting account with some saying that the three assailants fled on a motorcycle while others said that they escaped on foot.

Senior police officials have rushed to the spot and further investigations are on.
