About 20 people, including teachers and policemen, were injured as students of a college here went on rampage today protesting rejection of nominations of many for union polls for lack of required attendance, leading to closure of the institution sine die.

A group of irate students of Samant Chandra Shekhar (SCS) Autonomous college stormed the building, ransacked offices and set afire furniture causing extensive damage to computers and laboratory equipment, college Principal M N Duutta said.

The students were angry as the nominations of 10 of the 13 aspirants for the October 23 college union elections were rejected during scrutiny on October 18 for lack of the mandatory 75 per cent attendance, as prescribed by the Lyngdoh Commission, he said.

In view of the violence, the college has been closed sine die and those staying in hostels have been asked to vacate their rooms forthwith, he said.

About 20 people, including teachers and police personnel, sustained injuries in the attack by violent students, police sources said.

The unruly students were later dispersed by police who used mild force, they said.

About 15 students have been detained for interrogation, police said adding that some students also sustained minor injuries in police action.
