200,000 rights cases against security forces

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered around 203,499 cases against the military, paramilitary and police personnel in the last three years, Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal said in a written reply to parliament on Tuesday.

The minister said that of the total number of cases registered by the commission, 14 were of personnel accused in terrorist activities.

The maximum number of cases was registered in 2005 with 74,444 while in 2004, 74,401 cases were registered. According to data available till November 2006, the commission had registered 54,654 cases, he said.

Jaiswal said the commission had disposed off 90 per cent of the total registered cases. The NHRC disposes off cases if it does not find the case in accordance with the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
