Nearly 22,000 kgs of ganja estimated to be worth Rs 8.4 crore and 85 kg of pangolin scales seized by authorities in Assam were destroyed on Saturday at the outskirts of Guwahati.
According to Joint Commissioner of customs C Songate, the destruction of the narcotics and scales seized by the customs department between September 2003 and April this year would continue on Sunday.
Nearly 19,000 kg of narcotics were seized by the anti-smuggling units of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and customs units in Guwahati, while the remainder was seized by authorities at Rangiya near Guwahati, Songate said.
The seized items were burnt at Chandrapur on Guwahati's outskirts.
Permission was obtained from the deputy director of wildlife prevention (eastern region) in the environment and forest ministry for destroying the pangolin scales, he said.
On November 17, 2005, over 57,000 kg of ganja, 6,293 kg of hashish, 1,650 kg of heroin, 205 strips of the medicinal drug emphedrine and 714 strips of spasmo-proxyvon capsules were destroyed at the same venue in Chandrapur.
