Neighbours of Rajender Shetty (50), a resident of Nerul, were horrified to find not just his decomposing body but also his mentally challenged son Gaurav (22) sleeping next to it on Wednesday morning.
The neighbours forced open the door of Shetty’s flat in Trimurti Housing Society in Nerul’s Sector 8, as a strong odour was emitting from the house for a couple of days.
Shetty’s wife was in Madhya Pradesh when the incident took place.
Sub-inspector B.R. Hangirge said Shetty’s body was found with no shirt and his trouser was only in one leg. He said: “It seems that Shetty lost his balance while wearing the trouser after taking a bath. His head must have hit a hard object, causing his death.”
The police are surprised that Gaurav survived without any food and with the body smelling bad.
Hangirge said: “When we found him, he gestured to us that he is hungry. He has been telling us that he was hungry but his father was sleeping. He, too, then slept next to him.”
