The NDA government will commission a 24-hour television channel for farmers, which is likely to be announced in the upcoming budget.

The channel, which is a manifesto promise of the BJP, is likely to be allocated Rs 100 crore as working capital and will be rolled out from the state-run Doordarshan platform. It is tentatively named “DD Kisan”, an official said.

The department of agricultural research and education, under the agriculture ministry, will drive the content based on different agro-climatic zones of the country, an official said.

“The BJP will explore setting up of regional Kisan TV channels,” their manifesto had said.

Prasar Bharti is ready and has the capacity to launch a farmers’ channel, which will feature advisory programmes on modern farming, weather updates and government schemes for farmers, an official said.

Public broadcaster Prasar Bharti is mandated by law to run programmes which are in the interest of the farmer community.

A farm advisory channel will help complement the country’s ramshackle extension services, which refers to far crop-care solutions and is a critical aspect of profitable farming. Farmers frequently need help with evolving farm problems, such as an unexpected pest attack.
