Only 28 women candidates have been given opportunity by prominent political parties to test their luck in the poll arena in Kerala this time with Congress-led United Democratic Front, CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front and the BJP once again preferring men for most of the 140 assembly constituencies.

Political parties go all out to woo the fairer sex during election time, as women outnumber men in most of the constituencies in Kerala. But when it comes to nominating candidates, they think twice, according to some of the women candidates who have been given tickets.

The UDF, LDF, and the BJP together have put up 28 women candidates in the three phase elections in the state.

While the UDF has fielded seven women candidates, the LDF has given tickets to 11 women and BJP 10.

The Congress, which is contesting 77 seats, has given only four tickets to women.UDF ally- Janadhipatiya Samrakshana samithi (JSS) has put up its leader KR Gowri from Aroor, while the Democratic Indira Congress, with whom UDF is having electoral understanding, has given two tickets to women. Other UDF partners, including IUML, failed to nominate any women.

In the 2001 election, the Congress had allotted eight seats to women, same as in 1996.
