india Updated: Dec 10, 2008 16:04 IST

Three persons from the Vadodra city have been detained for allegedly planning serial blasts in the city, which they failed to execute, police sources said on Wednesday.

Qayamuddin Kapadia, who hails from the city and is one of the key conspirators of the serial blasts in Ahmedabad on July 26 which killed 57 and left many injured, had revealed names of three persons-Umar Mansuri, Asif and Rafiq alias Raja during his interrogation by Ahmedabad Crime Branch officials, they said.

"Three persons have been detained for planning serial blasts in the city. They are being questioned," City Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana told PTI.

Police sources said that Kapadia had asked his friend Mansuri to search for people who could provide them necessary logistical support.

The three persons detained knew about the plan to plant bombs in different parts of the city and one is believed to have helped Kapadia in the initial stages, they said.

The planning of serial blasts in the city fizzled out as Kapadia failed to get required support in the city, sources added.
