Diwali, the festival of lights and the victory of good over evil, was celebrated with great enthusiasm and traditional gaiety throughout Hamirpur district on Sunday night.

People distributed sweets and gifts among their relatives and friends. All business establishments and houses were beautifully decorated and most of them were repainted.

People did pooja at their places and sought blessings from Goddess Lakshmi.

Youngsters burst crackers and enjoyed the festivities. Though the bursting of crackers was banned after 10pm, sounds of bursting of crackers were heard even during midnight.

There was heavy rush of people in markets making purchases of various types of items for the festival.

Three major fire incidents were reported from different parts of the district in which property worth Rs 25 lakh was gutted.

Devi Chand, chief fire officer of Hamirpur, said the fire brigade acted swiftly and saved five houses from being burnt in Gauri village and two others in Bara village of the district.

He said all fire incidents were accidental and the cause behind them could not be ascertained. The fire officer said there was no loss of lives in the fire incidents.
