Three Kerala forest guards have been arrested for raping a tourist and her daughter inside a forest, clicking pictures and recording the act on their mobile phones.
The footage, posted on the video sharing website YouTube last week, exposed the crime committed six months ago.
Manikantan (24), Shahul Hameed (33) and Unnikrishnan (43) were arrested on Tuesday night and the original video clip was recovered from them. Police said they have confessed to the crime.
“We have booked the three and produced them in court,” Forest Minister Binoy Viswom told the assembly.
The three were earlier suspended from the forest department after news of the YouTube video started doing the rounds.
The crime was committed inside a forest at Thenmala in Kollam, south Kerala. The clip shows the mother and daughter, who hail from Tamil Nadu, were stripped and forced to walk in the forest by the guards.
They were later raped while the woman’s husband was tied to a tree, the police said.
Police suspect that the guards, in a drunken stupor, later shared the video with the person who eventually posted it on YouTube. The victims were holidaying at Aryankavu, part of India’s first planned eco-tourism destination Thenmala, 72 km from the state capital Thiruvananthapuram.
They seem to have decided not to file a complaint. The Kerala police are trying to trace them to record their statement.
