3 HP cops arrested on rape complaint

india Updated: Jul 03, 2013 23:42 IST

Three policemen were arrested in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi town, 150 km from Shimla, on Wednesday after a woman lodged a complaint stating that she had been raped by them repeatedly over two days.

In her complaint, the 32-year-old married woman said that her ordeal began on July 1 soon after she arrived in Mandi town bus stand to visit the Tarna temple dedicated to Goddess Kali. She said on reaching the Mandi bus stand she enquired about the route to the temple from a policeman on duty at the gate of the nearby police lines. He claimed he was also going towards the temple and would drop her there. Instead, she said, he forcibly took her to his house and raped her.

The woman said that the policeman, who she identified as Man Singh, called two more colleagues, Bhup Singh and Subhash Chand, who also raped her in the same room.

She said later the policemen offered to pay her money to keep silent about the incident. She claimed that she managed to escape and approach the police station.

The police registered a case of sexual intercourse not amounting to rape and wrongful confinement under Sections 376 D and 342 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested the accused on Wednesday.

Judicial magistrate Ramnik Sharma sent the three to police remand for four days. They will be produced in court on July 6.
