At least three policemen and 10 Naxalites of CPI (M) were killed in an encounter near Mungar village in Dhanora of Gadchiroli district, bordering Chhattisgarh, on Monday evening. The Naxalites were stated to have camped in Mungar forest area, about 50 kms from Dhanora.
Getting information that several Naxalites had gathered in the forest, a police team of around 15-armed policemen from Dhanora, raided the forest, leading the encounter that lasted over two hours.
The encounter began at 5.30 this evening and continued till 7.30 pm, the police said.
Three police jawans and 10 Naxalites were killed in the gun battle. At least three police personnel were injured, one of them seriously, in the exchange of fire. Among the injured was Munna Thakur, a police sub-inspector, who has been associated with the anti-Naxalites squad for the last several years.
Additional Director General of Police Anti-Naxalite Operation, Pankaj Gupta, told HT that over 10 Naxalites were killed in the encounter. “We could not recover the bodies of the Naxalites from the jungle due to darkness. An additional police force was sent to the affected area to assist the police personnel in this regard,” he said.
The police personnel who were killed in the encounter are yet to be identified. The security forces are still continuing raids in the forests, Gupta said.
This is the second major incident after the Naxalites had gunned down 15 police personnel near Dhanora in February this year.
