Three-year-old Priyal Shetty, a resident of D’souzawadi, was supposed to have been admitted to PD Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Mahim on Monday for a surgery to treat the hole in her heart.

But she is still at home because her parents cannot afford to pay Rs 2.5 lakh for her treatment.

Her parents — Roshan (33) and Beena Shetty (29) — came to know that she suffers from Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) after she turned one.

“She must have had the hole since birth. But we came to know only a year-and-a-half ago. She was prone to infections and would tire easily,” said Beena, a housewife.

“We took her to a child specialist when she had high fever and cough. He asked us to get a two-dimensional sonography done as he suspected there was a hole in her heart. The report was positive.”

The Shettys took a second opinion from Satya Sai Hospital in Bangalore.

“We were told there was a chance the hole would close on its own by the time she turned three. She celebrated her third birthday on August 16 and we conducted the sonography again,” said Beena.

“We then came to know the size of the hole had increased from 8×7 mm to 10×8 mm. We were asked to get the ASD closure surgery done immediately,” said Beena.

Roshan, who works in the hardware department of a courier company, earns about Rs 9,000 every month.

“The hospital has asked us to pay the amount on the day of admission. Since we didn’t have the money, we have asked for 10 days. We filled forms in several temple trusts for monetary help. Hospital authorities have also said they will give us some concession,” said Roshan.

“Priyal is the only child in our family. We do not want to lose her and will do whatever we can to get the surgery done,” added Beena.
