A day after communal tension broke out at a village in Surat; police on Wednesday arrested around 30 people and rushed additional forces to the area ahead of a bandh call given by a local cow protection committee.
"Police have arrested about 30 people in connection with the rioting incident that occurred at Kosadi village of Mangrol taluka yesterday," Surat Collector Dilip Raval told PTI.
Situation in the area became tense after a local leader of the Gau Raksha Samiti was killed when he had gone to check rumors about reported cow slaughter in the village, which has a population of around 5,000 people and is largely inhabited by minority community.
Following the incident, a mob from surrounding villages set several shops and houses on fire at Kosadi.
Police fired tear gas shells to quell the violence. Senior officials, including the District Collector, also rushed to the spot following the incident.
"The situation is under control in the entire taluka," Raval said.
"Additional police force has been called in from the neighbouring districts and deployed in the region," he said, adding tight security is being maintained at Kosadi and neighbouring areas for tomorrow's bandh call given by the Gau Raksha Samiti.
"No curfew has been imposed in any of the villages of Mangrol taluka," he added.
