Around 4,000 home guards demanding regularisation of jobs fought a pitched battle with the city police on Monday. Thirty home guards and policemen were injured in the hour-long clash.

The home guards, who had been protesting for several months, had gathered for the demonstration from across Uttar Pradesh. Their demands included a regular salary — instead of daily wages — which would be on par with police constables.

The trouble began when around 2 pm, the protesters started moving towards the residence of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. Finding their way barred, they pelted the policemen with stones and damaged a number of vehicles, including three buses and four police jeeps.

The police resorted to a lathicharge and lobbing tear gas shells. Among the injured were seven police personnel, including two deputy superintendents of police.

The violence also led to a three-hour-long traffic chaos on the adjoining roads.

Senior superintendent of police J Ravinder Goud said FIRs would be lodged against the home guards for attacking the police force, damaging public property and causing trouble.
