30 injured in bull-taming near Madurai

About 30 persons were injured, eight of them critically, in the ‘Jalli Kattu’ (traditional bull taming) organized as part of the ‘Pongal’ festivities near Madurai, about 450 km South of in Channai.

About 30 persons were injured, eight of them critically, in the ‘Jalli Kattu’ (traditional bull taming) organized as part of the ‘Pongal’ festivities near Madurai, about 450 km South of in Channai on Wednesday.

The ‘Jalli kattu’ at Avaniyapuram, a suburb of Madurai, witnessed a wondrous display by young male participants in taming the bulls, but about 30 of them were injured when some bulls turned violent and were thrown to the ground. They injured have been admitted to a hospital in Madurai.

The annual event, billed as a huge Tourism draw, was organized taking all precautions as directed by the Supreme Court and drew thousands of spectators including a good number of foreigners, sources in Madurai said.
