At least 25 were killed and 11 others seriously injured on Sunday after the bus they were travelling in fell down a hilly road in Odisha’s Deogarh district, police said.

The accident occurred at around 6.30 pm near Tileibani in the district when the driver lost control at a stiff curve and fell off the hill to a forest around 300 feet down.

The bus was carrying more than 40 folk artistes who were returning to their village in Bargarh district after performing in a village in Deogarh. Some women and children were also with the folk team.

Police reached the forested area around an hour later along with fire brigade, medical team and ambulance and started rescue work. However, the rescue work became difficult due to dense forest and darkness.

The administration brought in generators to continue the operation.

“At least 25 bodies have been recovered from the accident area. We have also rescued 11 persons with critical injuries and sent them to hospital,” Deogarh superintendent of polce Sarah Sharma said.

Police sources however said the death toll could go up to over 30.
