35-yr-old man attempts suicide at Jantar Mantar

A 35-year-old man set himself ablaze at the busy Jantar Mantar in the Capital on Saturday, suffering serious burn injuries.

A police official, who rushed to his rescue, was also injured in the incident which happened in full public view at 1430 hrs.

Rajnish, a resident of Etah in Uttar Pradesh, has been admitted to Ram Monohar Lohia hospital with 30 per cent burn injuries, police said.

A father of four children, Rajnish had been sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar for the last two months demanding safe release of his children whom he claimed had been kidnapped by his stepmother.

He was living separate from his wife.

Kamal Singh, an Assistant Sub-Inspector posted at Parliament Street police station, suffered 20 per cent burn injuries while trying to douse the fire and was also admitted to RML.

The condition of both of them is stable, hospital sources said.
