As many as 36 people — mostly children and women — were killed and 32 injured, as a truck rolled down a nearly 250-meter-deep gorge here at 4.30 pm on Wednesday.
Police sources said most of the occupants of the truck, residents of Bahot village in Balh Valley, were returning home from a birthday ceremony. Sources said the driver lost control at a sharp turn due to bad road conditions.
Twenty-two people died instantly, while 14 died later at the zonal hospital here.
Thirty bodies had been recovered so far, and rescue operations are on to trace the missing, IGP (Law and Order) S R Mardi said.
Himachal Pradesh Governor Urmila Singh and Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal expressed grief over the mishap and conveyed condolences to the kin of the deceased,
besides granting an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 to each family.
They directed district officials to provide all possible held to the injured.
