Four persons lost their vision after they underwent a cataract surgery in a government hospital in Thrissur.

“I was discharged a day after the surgery. When I complained about blurring vision the eye specialist said I would get full vision in a couple of days. But in a week I lost vision completely and doctors are now saying it is irreversible,” said 71-year-old K Kuttappan.

“Initial reports suggest severe infection led to this unfortunate incident. We will ensure best treatment to them,” said Thrissur medical college superintendent Dr K Balagopalan on Wednesday.

All four, in 65-75 age group, had undergone surgery in last three weeks.

Ordering an inquiry, Kerala health minister VS Siva Kumar said, “We will take strict action against those responsible for this”. The state government would bear the medical expenses of all four patients, he added.

Kumar ordered the hospital to stop all surgeries. Three of the four patients are in Thrissur Medical College while one has been admitted to a private hospital.
