Five top-ranking rebels, including a 'self styled Lieutenant' belonging to the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), surrendered before the authority and three top Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militants of Meghalaya were arrested in Tripura's North Tripura district during the last 72 hours.
According to the police, five insurgents of NLFT (BM) including 'self styled' lieutenant Rabindra Debbarma, laid down arms on Thursday before the SDPO of Kanchanpur at Anandabazar at a simple ceremony. The militants deposited a .9mm Chinese made pistol, 26 rounds of cartridges, two Chinese made hand grenades and some incriminating documents.
The surrendered lieutenant informed that he joined the underground outfit eleven years ago. At first, he went to Cherapunjee in Meghalaya, close to Bangladesh border and then went to the Sajak base camp in that country.
In another incident, BSF jawans on patrol captured three hardcore militants of Meghalaya based HNLC from Baithongbari border with Bangladesh in North Tripura's Dharmanagar subdivision on Tuesday.
Police said the BSF jawans on duty saw three persons close to the Bangladesh border at about 7 pm. BSF jawans captured them and handed over to Dharmanagar police. Interrogation was on.
