After being trapped in an 80-feet borewell for over 17 hours, four-year-old Kishan Pal was finally rescued here on Saturday morning.

Kishan, son of Brajesh, was playing with his friends on Friday afternoon in village Khamarpur Barjua of Sirsaganj tehsil in Firozabad district. At around 2 pm, the child fell into the borewell. He was stuck at a depth of about 60-feet.

Official sources said that the child, who had not eaten for over 17 hours, has been shifted to the district hospital where his condition is said to be stable. Even as the rescue operation was on, oxygen was supplied to the boy by a medical team.

The boy was recovered after four JCB machines and a Pokeland machine were pressed into service.

Incidentally, there was VVIP movement in the vicinity as a function to mark declaration of Sirsaganj as a new tehsil was in progress. With the programme getting over by that time (when the incident occurred), the police and administration officials, including local MLA Hari Om Yadav, district magistrate Vijay Kiran Anand and Firozabad SSP Piyush Srivastava reached the spot.

Within half-an-hour of the incident, JCBs reached the spot and the digging process began at around 2.30pm. Sources revealed that the cries of the child were first heard around 3pm and digging till the depth of 10 feet was complete by 3.30 pm.

“Four JCBs and one Pokeland machine were pressed into service. A ramp was created at 60-feet to create a channel in the borewell,” said sub-divisional magistrate CB Singh.

Family of the child, especially his mother, praised the district administration for their effort to bring out their child safely. Villagers are also praising the efforts of district magistrate of Firozabad Vijay Kiran Anand who camped throughout the night along with superintendent of police (rural) Sanjay Singh. A villager Rajan Yadav, 20, from a nearby village Dharma are also being praised for his last minute effort in bringing out the child after he descended with a rope tied to his waist.

‘Kishan, 4, is hale and hearty now but has been kept under medical supervision as we are not taking chances with the child’s health. It was team work that led to his rescue,” said DM Vijay Kiran Anand who stayed all night at Khamarpur Baijua village under Sirsaganj tehsil of Firozabad district where the mishap occurred.

“There is a court order to keep these bore well closed but this was a private bore well of a farmer. Still orders are being issued for compliance of court’s directive,” the DM said.

Rajan Yadav from nearby village Dharma emerged as the local hero, as he took the initiative to get down to the boring with the help of a rope. This had to be done as the child was descending deeper down.

There were few choices, as digging further was impractical and so a tunnel was created. A braveheart was needed to descend in the tunnel to the bore well. This task was undertaken by Rajan Yadav who descended and brought out Kishan.

The child was recovered at a depth of 60 feet after four JCB machines and one Poke Land machine worked continuously. The child who had not eaten for 17 hours was in panic but stable. His family, specially his mother, is much relieved and all praise for the district administration.
